Discovering womb steaming

womb steaming herbs

So, when I first learned of womb steaming while I was on the Fertility Massage course in 2015, I was intrigued!  I found out that it is an ancient practice, and has been used by many different cultures throughout the ages. It involves the combination of herbs and steam, to prevent and treat women’s reproductive and womb issues. This medicinal herbal steam treatment works by cleansing the reproductive system. It moves stagnant energ,y and helps to increase circulation and release unnecessary build up.  The steam carries the medicinal properties from the herbs into the womb, nourishing and relaxing the tissue. This allows for better functioning of the reproductive system.

I initially thought it sounded bizarre, and I laughed when I found out you sit naked over a bowl of steaming herbs, wrapped in a blanket to retain the heat and steam.  So I decided it was best to try it out for myself before recommending it to my clients.

I found it to be a really nourishing thing to do for myself, and it did feel very cleansing for body and mind. It has helped improve the quality of my cycles – i felt so relaxed and calm afterwards, and had a very rested sleep.  It is recommended you do it just before bed time, so you can fall into bed after it.

It is best to do it in the first part of your cycle (pre-ovulation). The lovely thing is you can also use it as a ritual or meditation. You do the steam while holding an intention of what you want to release and let go of, and also of what you would like to manifest in your life. It can be a very sacred experience for body, mind and spirit.

Womb Steaming is used to help with painful or heavy periods, improving fertility, toning of the womb tissue, speeding up recovery after child birth, alleviating abdominal pain or pressure, stimulation of healthy sexual energy, and releasing cellular memories of past trauma.

I offer Fertility Massage treatments at my clinic Serenity Massage & Holistic Centre in Glasgow.  Once you have come in for your initial treatment, I send you an email with lots of useful resources, including instructions on how to do womb steaming. I also have the womb steam herbs available. These packs have been put together by a herbalist, especially for this purpose.

I hope this post brings more awareness of this healing practice, as most of the ladies I work with, including myself, had never heard of it before!

Neals Yard Remedies

Detoxing what you are putting onto your skin is a good idea when trying to improve your fertility.

Eliminating or reducing harmful chemicals such as SLS and Parabens, which are very often found in shampoo’s, body washes, cosmetics and also aluminium found in most deodorants, may help reduce the chemical overload on your body.

There is increasing evedience now that these chemicals can cause disruption to the endocrine system.

I recommend replacing as many products as you can with a natural alternative.

Neals Yard Remedies and Skin Care are good quality aromatherapy products that use organic ingredients where possible!

Fertility Massage Through Your Cycle

The massage will vary according to where you are in your cycle and your unique situation.

Pre-Ovulation & Ovulation (Natural & Assisted)

After you have finished your period, you are in the phase where your ovaries are now working to produce mature follicles, in the lead up to ovulating.

When you are in this part of your cycle, your massage will incorporate working on your lower back, digestive system and your womb area. I am aiming to increase the circulation in the whole of your abdomen to help boost the flow of nutrients, oxygen and hormones to your womb and ovaries.

Energetically, Pre-Ovulation is when women are in their “Spring Time” whilst Ovulation is our “Summer Time” When women are in these 2 stages of the cycle our energy starts to wake up and become alive within our bodies, the time when most women feel new-energy, enthusiasm and vitality.

Post Ovulation (natural) or Post Implantation (Assisted)

After you have ovulated or had embryo transfer, there is a possibilty that you could be pregnant so I will adjust the massage with awareness of this.

You are still able to have the massage however I avoid massaging the womb area and place more focus on the lower back, sacrum, upper abdomen to increase circulation. In this phase progesterone increases, which slows down the digestive system, so having the abdominal massage will be beneficial. I can also incorporate guided visualisations if you like, and energy work.

Energetically, Post Ovulation is when we enter our “Autumn” phase; this is a time of change and a need to be truthful with oneself. We want to clear out those things in our lives that aren’t serving us well.  This is where we typically experience PMT. This can be a fiery time, where our tolerence levels decrease, and we can be quick to react with rage.  Having the massage at this time is very nurturing, and can help these feelings gently move out of your body.

This is also the time when many women are going through the 2 week wait.  Having the massage during this time can help alleviate stress, help promote the production of feel-good hormones and help reduce anxiousness.

Menstruation (Natural & Assisted)

When you are bleeding, you can still receive the massage, however the womb area is avoided. I will instead focus on the lower back and sacral area, the digestive system, and acupressure points on your feet, along with energy work and rebozo massage, which is deeply relaxing.

Energetically, when we are menstruating we are in our “Winter” phase.  This is a time when women become more reflective and Inward, preferring to hide away and have alone time and space. As well as shedding blood, we are also shedding emotions, and anything that doesn’t serve our well-being.

What if I am not actively trying to conceive?

In this case you can have the full treatment, including womb massage anywhere in your cycle apart from when you are bleeding as when you are bleeding I avoid the womb area.

What if I don’t have a cycle?

If your cycle is missing or irregular then having a block of treatments approximately 1 week apart will be beneficial to help re-balance your body and increase the blood flow into the womb. This may help your cycle to return and become regulated.
